Don's Inspiration
LeatherLights was created in the Summer of 2023, in the midst of settling into retirement -- wondering how to combine my love of lighting, fascination with wood and new-found passion for leather. At 60 years old, my family's recent travels took us thru the southern Mediterranean countries where we we're literally surrounded by leather dying, tooling and fabrication -- especially in Northern Italy, Provence & Spain! I was smitten. 40 years in advertising, handwrought lighting, studio management & the housing industry provided the backdrop & funding for this passionate undertaking (and maybe along with the blessing & support of my spouse!).
Leather Forays
Although the classic lessons of creating key rings, watch bands, wallets, belts and bags will be instrumental, my focus will be on the creation of bespoke leather lighting including pendants, lamps, lampshades, table and floor lamps -- as well as wine totes, satchels and trays. From Milan's Design Week; to Gordes, France; to the Tanning Museum of Leather in Igualada, Spain -- all contributed to the initial gathering of ideas & creations in my head.
Tools for the Protégé
Quality and good design are really important considerations when it comes to creating handcrafted, bespoke leather goods & lighting -- that's why I hope to use the great hand tools, dies, hides, materials and my ever evolving skills; as well as the patience and expertise of my family, friends & mentors: Roger for allowing me to create a Leather / Lighting Studio; Babs for leather tooling lessons; Morrie in electrical & lamp-making, and Mark in custom woodworking -- with a special shout-out to Valya, my brothers partner for pushing me to document this from the start on YouTube through content creation. Thank you one & all!
